Region N: Coastal Bend

Texas is divided into 16 water planning regions. The 16 regions were created by looking at shared water sources, community boundaries, public input, and other factors. Here we highlight Region N in South Texas bordering the Gulf Coast. Anchored by Corpus Christi, this region relies on a highly interconnected network of surface water sources to support municipalities, industry, ports, and agriculture.

Primary Water Source: Nueces River Basin

More than 70 percent of the region’s water comes from surface sources, many of which that are supplied by the Nueces River Basin. The Nueces River system—its tributaries and reservoirs—along with water from Lake Texana and the Colorado River, provides the primary supply for the Coastal Bend Region.

Key issues and approaches for Region N

Industrial growth, reliance on the drought-vulnerable Nueces River, and shared regional water use continue to shape planning across the Coastal Bend area. The regional water plan—updated every five years and projected through 2080—includes seawater and groundwater desalination to meet supply needs.
